{"id":65584,"date":"2019-11-27T13:06:06","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T02:06:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=65584"},"modified":"2019-11-28T07:57:29","modified_gmt":"2019-11-27T20:57:29","slug":"modern-telling-of-traditional-tale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/modern-telling-of-traditional-tale\/","title":{"rendered":"Modern telling of traditional tale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EBENEZER Scrooge, a Christmas-loathing curmudgeonly miser, is about to receive redemption.<\/p>\n<p>His change of heart can be seen in the Ballarat National Theatre\u2019s upcoming performance of Charles Dickens\u2019 classic story <em>A Christmas Carol.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Directed by Mary-Rose McLaren, an academic at Victoria University, the play is an ensemble piece with actors playing multiple parts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDickens went around London reading the story so there is a performative element to the book,\u201d she said. \u201cTranslating the book into a theatrical presentation was easier than I expected.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are four narrators who share the telling of the story of Scrooge and the ghosts of his Christmas past, present and the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>John Bolger, in the role of Scrooge, is the only actor who appears in the play as the traditional 1843 character.<\/p>\n<p>All the other characters around him are timeless with modern and Dickensian characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the cast ensemble are in Christmas clothes, wearing the festive season\u2019s colours of green, red or white while the narrators are dressed in gaudy Christmas tacky stuff,\u201d Ms McLaren said.<\/p>\n<p>The play is a celebration of Dickens\u2019 rich story telling as well as a salute to the power of truth and goodness in people.<\/p>\n<p>Ballarat National Theatre presents <em>A Christmas Carol<\/em> at Ballarat Courthouse Theatre, 17 Lydiard Street South, Ballarat from Saturday, 30 November to Saturday, 7 December at 8pm with matinees on Sunday, 1 December and Saturday, 7 December at 2pm.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are available at Her Majesty&#8217;s Theatre Box Office during business hours, or online at <a href=\"http:\/\/hermaj.com\/\"><strong>hermaj.com<\/strong><\/a>.
