A new Suncorp survey has found Australians prioritise pets over friends when looking for a new home.<\/strong><\/p>\n

THE Brisbane-based bank asked more than one-thousand six-hundred Australians what home features and lifestyle factors most influenced their search for a new home.<\/p>\n

Most placed more importance on finding a pet-friendly home than one close to friends and family.<\/p>\n

Suncorp\u2019s executive general manager for lending, Glenn Haslam, said that the survey showed pets were \u201cadored members of the modern Australian family,\u201d and that this was \u201ceven more true for younger generations.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of those aged 18 to 34, 59 per cent said a home\u2019s pet-friendliness was more important than living near their mates.<\/p>\n

That Australians care more about a home\u2019s pet-friendliness than moving close to friends and family might surprise some readers, but it made perfect sense to 28-year-old renter Hayley O\u2019loughlin.<\/p>\n

A lawyer and dog owner, Ms O\u2019loughlin describes Winston, her six-year-old toy cavoodle, as \u201cthe sweetest boy in the world,\u201d \u201cone of the family,\u201d and her and her husband\u2019s \u201cfirst-born child.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ms O\u2019loughlin said finding a pet-friendly property had never been that difficult \u2013 though she said that was probably because Winston only weighs six kilograms and doesn\u2019t shed hair.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever we were looking for a place, the first thing we said is, \u2018Are you pet-friendly, because we have a dog, and we need him to live with us\u2019. And we never found any issues with that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe included favourable images in the application including photos of Winston in a Hawaiian shirt, and tried to win them over that way, by saying \u2018look, he\u2019s sweet and never barks, and he\u2019s not going to cause anyone any trouble\u2019.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I think the biggest concern for property managers and owners, particularly if you\u2019re in a body corporate, is if the dog barks and annoys other people.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to tenants\u2019 rights advocates, the ease with which Ms O\u2019loughlin has navigated the rental market as a pet owner is the exception rather than the rule.<\/p>\n

Tenants Union of NSW senior policy officer Leo Patterson Ross said there was a \u201cmythology amongst landlords and agents about how much damage pets can cause.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe really haven\u2019t seen evidence that it\u2019s a widespread problem,\u201d Mr Patterson Ross said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the time, people who have pets as part of their family take care of their pets very well and take care of their home very well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tenants in the Australian Capital Territory can own a pet without seeking their landlord\u2019s permission, and Victorian renters will have very similar rights when new laws come into effect in July 2020.<\/p>\n

But tenants in most other states still have to seek written permission from their landlords before inviting a pet into their home.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
