{"id":66748,"date":"2020-01-31T05:55:37","date_gmt":"2020-01-30T18:55:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=66748"},"modified":"2020-01-29T11:13:44","modified_gmt":"2020-01-29T00:13:44","slug":"new-australians-take-the-pledge-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/new-australians-take-the-pledge-2\/","title":{"rendered":"New Australians take the pledge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ABOUT thirty people have become Australian citizens during an event at Ballarat Town Hall on 26 January.<\/p>\n<p>They came from 15 different countries, but all had one thing in common &#8211; a desire to join with millions of others in citizenship of this nation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66749\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66749\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-66749\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/01\/IMG_0914-for-web-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66749\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Member for Ballarat Catherine King.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Member for Ballarat Catherine King delivered a message to attendees on behalf of the Federal immigration minister and welcomed the new Australians.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttending citizenship ceremonies is one of the best parts of my job,\u201d she said. \u201cThese people have chosen to join our national community, they have decided that Australia is the place where they want to live their lives and raise their families.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should all feel proud and honoured that they have felt so welcomed in our Ballarat community that they decided to formally become Australian citizens.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo see the joy on their faces makes you realise how lucky you are to be Australian.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four of the people to become Australian citizens on the day were Renuka Basavarajappa Maladihalli, her husband Xavier Dass and their sons Tim and Youhanna.<\/p>\n<p>As a family they came from Bangalore in India to Australia for work. Ms Basavarajappa Maladihalli is a dentist with Ballarat Health Services in Sebastapol and Mr Dass an IT engineer at IBM in Mount Helen.<\/p>\n<p>After nearly a decade living in Australia, they said now was a good time to become citizens.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_66751\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-66751\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-66751\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/01\/IMG_0932-for-web-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-66751\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tim, Renuka Basavarajappa Maladihalli, Xavier Dass and Youhanna after becoming citizens.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve thought about it for quite some time\u201d Mr Dass said. \u201cWe came here about eight-and-a-half years ago and decided we\u2019d been here for so long that it was time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe like Ballarat more than Melbourne. We have a small community here and we like this place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Guest speaker George Ermer, one of the 300 official Australia Day ambassadors, added his personal story on becoming a citizen of Australia.<\/p>\n<p>He emigrated from Hungary in the 1940s before settling in Melbourne\u2019s inner northern suburbs, officially becoming an Australian as a teenager in 1954 at Northcote Town Hall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn Australia Day one of the most treasured and emotional events is the citizenship ceremony,\u201d he said. \u201cMany will be taking place today all over Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of us to who have been part of citizenship ceremonies will remember the pride and sense of achievement that makes this special event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still remember mine 66 years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ABOUT thirty people have become Australian citizens during an event at Ballarat Town Hall on 26 January.
