	{"id":67383,"date":"2020-02-26T19:06:47","date_gmt":"2020-02-26T08:06:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=67383"},"modified":"2020-02-26T19:06:47","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T08:06:47","slug":"pride-of-big-cats-head-out-to-the-plains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/pride-of-big-cats-head-out-to-the-plains\/","title":{"rendered":"Pride of big Cats head out to the Plains"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Geelong Football Club\u2019s annual Country Day has seen players from both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams head out into Golden Plains Shire.<\/p>\n<p>Held on Friday, 14 February, the day saw players attend Teesdale, Bannockburn, Lethbridge, Anakie Inverleigh and Meredith primary schools.<\/p>\n<p>The visits also included St Mary MacKillop Primary School in Bannockburn and Lethbridge Junior Football Club as well as Inverleigh and Bannockburn Football Netball clubs.<\/p>\n<p>Mid-fielder Cameron Guthrae was at Meredith Primary School and said the day meant something to the club, the players and the kids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really good to immerse yourself in the Geelong community and the wider community,\u201d he said. \u201cThe kids get a lot out of us being here. I remember when the AFL players used to come to my school or my footy club, I used to get so much out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Geelong\u2019s Country Day is now in its 20th year and Guthrae has been taking part for 10 of them.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_67385\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-67385\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-67385\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/IMG_1171-for-web-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-67385\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cameron Guthrae with Cat\u2019s fan and grade 3 pupil Laura.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While there were many Cat\u2019s jumpers at Meredith Primary, the club\u2019s visit wasn\u2019t about creating young fans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it translates as support for the club but that\u2019s not really why we do it,\u201d he said. \u201cThe main reason we\u2019re out here is to put a smile on kids\u2019 faces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great to be involved in something like this and hopefully we can continue that for the next 20 years. It\u2019s a big day for us but we really enjoy it as players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At Meredith the whole school took part in footy skills workshops, with the grade 6 pupils setting up and running the stations.<\/p>\n<p>School captain and grade 6 student Lilly was part of the team that set up the activity stations for the skills workshop.<\/p>\n<p>As a Cat\u2019s fan herself, she was rapt the players were in town.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing, it\u2019s really good,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s a chance for everyone to ask questions and get signatures. It\u2019s just a really good opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone here pretty much barracks for Geelong, we\u2019re all very excited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grade 5\/6 teacher Fairlie Pritchard said the responsibility placed on the older students in setting up the activities was a good test for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing so early in the year I tried to stay out of this one as much as I could and said, \u2018It\u2019s up to you to show you can do this because you are the leaders of school\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey got together as a group at recess and came down and sorted out who was doing what and they\u2019ve worked really well together, which is a good sign for the rest of the year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Pritchard said that having the players visit was special for the school community and many ways.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great recognition to know people realise we\u2019re out here,\u201d she said. \u201cSometimes you feel a bit like you\u2019re the forgotten school being halfway between Geelong and Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the footy club have always made sure we\u2019ve been included.
