THE Ballarat Highlanders junior rugby squads have begun their preseason training and are on the lookout for more players.<\/p>\n

Currently, the Highlanders have a under 17s and under 14s team, with the hopes to introduce a under 18 side in 2021.<\/p>\n

With over 20 players on each squad, the Highlanders aim to have the under 16s compete in the Victorian Junior Club Rugby competition, while the 14s will focus on training and developing their skillsets.<\/p>\n

Under 16s senior coach Michael Porter said people with any level of speed, stamina or stature can play the sport.<\/p>\n

\u201cRugby really holds true to the fact that people of all sizes can play, there\u2019s positions to suit everybody,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In April, the Highlanders are also introducing a primary school program for children aged between six and 11.<\/p>\n

All coaches are volunteers, however there is a call for more of them to help with both the juniors as well as the primary school squad.<\/p>\n

When it comes to the under 14s, coach Nick Hayes said the point of the program is to allow all kids the chance to experience rugby.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot every child wants to play AFL, cricket or soccer, so we\u2019re trying to offer something different here and build up the kids skillsets in a controlled environment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Training takes place every Tuesday and Thursday, on the Shed Oval at St Patrick\u2019s College. Under 16s train between 4pm and 5pm, with the under 14s starting at 5pm and finishing at 6pm.<\/p>\n
