{"id":70690,"date":"2020-08-28T04:57:09","date_gmt":"2020-08-27T18:57:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=70690"},"modified":"2020-08-28T13:00:51","modified_gmt":"2020-08-28T03:00:51","slug":"mair-streets-new-sweet-tooth-destination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/mair-streets-new-sweet-tooth-destination\/","title":{"rendered":"Mair Street\u2019s new sweet tooth destination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AFTER being stood down due to COVID-19 shutdowns, Catherine Gill took her newfound freedom and opened a business of her own.<\/p>\n<p>Months of hard work later, she finally opened Lilly\u2019s, the boutique chocolate and coffee shop she had been planning for years.<\/p>\n<p>With both her and her partner losing their jobs during the first round of lockdown, Ms Gill said it gave them time to evaluate how and when they would bring a new business to life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter working in hospitality for 20 years, it\u2019s always been a dream to own my own place,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough it was hard during a pandemic, there\u2019s always a story with us so I wouldn\u2019t see us doing it at a normal time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t really a place for really nice chocolates and gift boxes in Ballarat, so we jumped with that and went with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The shop formerly housed the Upholstery Gallery and is located near the top of Mair Street, a prime position for both inner city residential and commercial traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Gill said that although she hopes the thriving Mair Street thoroughfare will bring customers, the main appeal of the place is that it\u2019s a bit tucked away.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I first noticed it, I just loved how beautiful the front veranda and the window was,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s also great not being right on Sturt Street with all of the noise and busyness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we found the spot in March, we used the lockdown period to do the space up ourselves with the help of some of our family.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70692\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70692\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70692\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/08\/Lillys-Ballarat-4-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70692\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The confectionary selection on display at Lilly&#8217;s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The shop currently boasts a wide range of high-end chocolates crafted in Sydney and lolly varieties for the kids along with Padre speciality coffee and hot chocolate.<\/p>\n<p>Only opening its doors earlier this month, Ms Gill said her cliental have already shown her an overwhelming amount of support and excitement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been really good so far to see people have a smile on their face when they walk in and are really excited that the space has opened into a caf\u00e9 again,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve started to get a lot of messages on social media from people saying they love the coffee and that they\u2019re really excited.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking forward to being able to fully open in the future because we will have cakes, lunch options and spots to sit as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lilly\u2019s chocolate and coffee shop is currently operating for takeaway only from Tuesday to Saturday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AFTER being stood down due to COVID-19 shutdowns, Catherine Gill took her newfound freedom and opened a business of her own.
