	{"id":70951,"date":"2020-09-05T04:55:00","date_gmt":"2020-09-04T18:55:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=70951"},"modified":"2020-08-30T18:44:22","modified_gmt":"2020-08-30T08:44:22","slug":"deborah-lee-klein","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/deborah-lee-klein\/","title":{"rendered":"Klein\u2019s figurative creatures born of unusual artform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DECADES worth of Deborah Lee Klein\u2019s dimensional paper illustrations are on display virtually, and for sale, via <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/discover-art-and-meet-its-maker-online\/\">Gallery on Sturt.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The figurative, low relief designs depicting animals \u2013 like birds \u2013 insects, and people are \u201cheirlooms for the future,\u201d enclosed in shadowbox frames, created with standard, acid-free art papers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI emboss, fold, bend, shape and then layer, in order to give the effect of a 3D form, within the interests of relief I have within the images,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI work figuratively, or realistically, but I also abstract the figure to a small degree so that I can get a sense of the character of the subject I\u2019m hoping to capture in the paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Viewers will see some of Klein\u2019s favourite works in the exhibition, including <em>Beneath the Surface<\/em>; a signature piece of an octopus in a rockpool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the sinuous forms of the arms, and the play between the opaque papers and the translucent papers in terms of fluidity.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70954\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70954\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70954\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/09\/Praying-Mantis-Pair-Formatted-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70954\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Praying Mantis Pair.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSimilarly, with <em>Praying Mantis Pair<\/em>, they have quite an abstracted, very angular background, but they themselves are quite spiky and angular, so it was a lot of fun to capture that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re tiny little things, but they have this great show and sense of menace between themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Klein said her illustrative art form is an old one, but she, and others working in a similar way have always had to pioneer their makers\u2019 processes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere isn\u2019t a how-to. There isn\u2019t a place to learn how to do this. It\u2019s something we invent and create as we go along.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDrawing is at the foundation of what I do, using photographic reference and live drawings of my subjects. I draw and draw, plan and design until I get a layout and representation of that particular creature that I\u2019m happy with, and can see will translate to paper,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70956\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-70956\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-70956\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/09\/Pangolin-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-70956\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pangolin.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThis show is an opportunity for people to have a look at the work that I do, which is unusual, and some of my favourite subjects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As a student in the mid-80s, a textile printing background \u2013 and kimono silk \u2013 inspired Klein to play around with paper, experimenting with design replication. It was \u201clove at first sight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a gorgeous, fibrous material, not infinitely malleable, but by wetting it and forming it, I\u2019ve found ways to push those boundaries a bit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I found paper illustration, I found a safe and benign material to use.
