IT\u2019S been nearly three decades since Ballarat last had a drive-in cinema, but that\u2019s about to change in just a few days the Showgrounds will soon offer the throwback experience.<\/p>\n
Showbiz Cinemas – the operators of the multiplex at Delacombe Town Centre – have teamed up with the Ballarat Agricultural & Pastoral Society and the City of Ballarat to put on the drive-in, which will run each weekend until at least April next year.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are absolutely delighted to be able to bring this concept to fruition after such a difficult time for our community in recent months,\u201d said Showbiz Group director Chris Jones.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe understand this will be one of the first major events in Ballarat since the easing of restrictions and what better way to enjoy a social-outing, watching a movie on the big screen, whilst still being able to maintain physical distancing.\u201d<\/p>\n
With the Ballarat Show cancelled and the regular Rotary Markets also on the backburner, the Showgrounds on the corner of Howitt Street and Creswick Road have sat mostly idol since March.<\/p>\n
BAPS executive officer Elizabeth van Beek said hosting the drive-in at the space was a great way to utilise the facility and could lead to bigger things.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are thrilled to partner with a local cinema company to bring something positive, fun and entertaining to the community,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere has been recent community discussion about possible uses for the existing Showgrounds as we plan to relocate to\u2026 Mount Rowan. A drive-in cinema is just one of the many possible uses for the longer-term future.\u201d<\/p>\n
The first screening will run from 13 November and moviegoers will be able to tune into the film\u2019s audio on their car\u2019s stereo system.<\/p>\n
There\u2019ll also be a full candy bar on offer with all the favourites – from popcorn to choc tops and hot food. All sales, including tickets will be online and vehicle numbers capped.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
