They needed breathable air, too.<\/p>\n<p>Well-trained employees were critically needed for these sites, so the Ballarat Mining Board proposed the city establish their own School of Mines, and passed a motion to begin building it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72919\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72919\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72919\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/11\/Analytical-Lab-1905-300x246.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"246\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72919\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It\u2019s estimated this was captured by the New South Wales Mines Department on a visit to the highly regarded School.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Fifteen decades later, the School has evolved into what is now known as Federation University. This year, the tertiary institution is celebrating their 150th anniversary.<\/p>\n<p>FedUni curator: art and historical collections, Clare Gervasoni said in the initial decades at Lydiard Street South, running the School was a \u201chard slog.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people put a lot of effort in to keep others employed and get enough money from the enrolments,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a very practical education, and we had our own mine, so students would go into the model mine where there would be stamper batteries&#8230; Mines would send parcels of dirt, which they called \u2018stuff,\u2019 to be assayed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome people would do the assaying in the model mine, which was fundraising to keep the school going, and the students always had hands-on experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72923\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72923\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72923\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/11\/M4739-300dpi-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72923\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ballarat School of Mines Museum, 1889.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the turn of the century, the School\u2019s boys were heading down real mines. The FedUni Art and Historical Collections have photos of miners outside poppet heads with pupils.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Gervasoni said a man with a Ballarat School of Mines education would impress the mining industry and its employers internationally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith that qualification, they could walk into any job around the world. It was known they were so well trained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo many of our boys started up the great mines, so they would employ those that they knew with similar training to them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Australian Mining Hall of Fame has quite a few people from the Ballarat School of Mines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Ballarat Technical Art School arrived in 1907 after a technological commission, and this centre is the first generation of what\u2019s now the prestigious Federation University Arts Academy.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72922\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72922\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72922\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/11\/M4247-SMB-Art-c1920-002-300x219.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"219\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72922\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Technical Art School pupils drawing from plaster models of human bodies in a room purpose-built for art teaching and learning, circa 1920.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the time, there were three arts schools in Ballarat, but Ms Gervasoni said the Department of Education would fund only one. Luckily for the School of Mines, a financial injection was given to their art division.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe students were taught very well in practical art, techniques and art history, and were commissioned to create trophies, war honour books, and boards, working with timber and stained glass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part of the building and decoration within Villers Bretonneux\u2019s Victoria School was worked on by students from the Ballarat Technical Art School.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the great art teachers trained in Ballarat. There are decades of them that&#8230;were sought by the Department of Education,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s now the longest continuing tertiary arts institution in Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72924\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72924\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72924\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/11\/m7254-2-edited02-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"224\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72924\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Davey Paxman Experimental Steam Engine about 1930. It was one of two of its kind worldwide, and was constructed for the School of Mines.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dating back to 1926 from Dana Street Primary School, the Ballarat Teachers\u2019 College added a string to the institution\u2019s practical education bow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey started with 61 students. People learnt to write on a blackboard and how to control a class. It was hands-on,\u201d Ms Gervasoni said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough the whole university timeline, those practical ideals come through continually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The centenary year, 1970, saw the opening of the Tertiary Division of the Ballarat School of Mines at Mount Helen campus. The Lydiard Street site was cramped, and the government was boosting tertiary education.<\/p>\n<p>It became known as the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education. TAFE and technical education was still at the School of Mines, and the Ballarat Technical School, established in 1913, was still running for secondary aged students working towards apprenticeships.<\/p>\n<p>In the late 70s, Ballarat Teachers\u2019 College became the State College of Victoria at Ballarat. It then merged with the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education to become the Ballarat College of Advanced Education.<\/p>\n<p>At this time, the Ballarat School of Mines separated.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72920\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72920\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72920\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/11\/IMG_4121-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72920\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lydiard Street campus, circa 1960.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ballarat University College was the next initiative, assisted by the University of Melbourne, before universities around the state began to merge. At that time, the College stood alone and became the University of Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004, the School of Mines re-joined the family, becoming part of the University of Ballarat, and 10 years later on January 1, 2014, Federation University Australia was formally founded, rebranding it all.<\/p>\n<p>Vice chancellor and president, Professor Duncan Bentley said he\u2019s only new to the team, but understands how intrinsically \u201cpart of the fabric\u201d FedUni is in Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of people who have a deep connection and family history going back generations with Federation and its predecessor institutions is quite remarkable,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Bentley views the skills and trades needed today as similar to those which were needed in \u201cfuelling economic growth\u201d in 1870.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_72925\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-72925\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-72925\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/11\/map-Mount-Helen-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-72925\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Mount Helen campus sketched during planning, 1960s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cNow is a time for huge opportunity, with our connections, our digital networks, infrastructure, ability with trains and roads&#8230; We can transform our communities and make them even more vibrant, alive and attractive,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have 5G rolling out, smart farms and agriculture, advanced manufacturing in renewables, bio and med-tech taking off in health, and education and the arts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederation University is right at the heart of it, and we\u2019ll provide the skills and facilitate working with industry and government to increase the value-add in regional Victoria.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>IN 1869, Ballarat\u2019s industrious community was finding it harder to mine for gold than they had before.
