	{"id":72930,"date":"2020-11-26T04:47:24","date_gmt":"2020-11-25T17:47:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=72930"},"modified":"2020-11-26T07:56:22","modified_gmt":"2020-11-25T20:56:22","slug":"gyms-covid-marshals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/gyms-covid-marshals\/","title":{"rendered":"Fitness sector says, \u2018gyms are safe\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GYM operators are calling for COVID-19 restrictions to ease to further support their clients and sustain their businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Genesis Health &amp; Fitness club owner Mel Tempest said she wants COVID marshals removed from her facility.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t need them, they\u2019re too expensive and we can\u2019t be fully operational if we have them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will also have less traffic congestion if we\u2019re open 24-seven, as opposed to condensing it to staffed hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause we can\u2019t operate fully, we have to give our members a discount, yet it\u2019s costing us money to open the doors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part-owner of Elements Health &amp; Fitness Lee Martin opened a facility six weeks before the first pandemic lockdown. She is keen to energise clients who may have lost their motivation through the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere will be lots of health issues in the future that come about because people haven\u2019t been moving in these last eight months. In the long run, this could be far worse for the health system,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Shadow Minister for Sport, Tourism and Major Events, David Hodgett, was accompanied by Member for Ripon Louise Staley in Ballarat last week as part of a consultation process with fitness centres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe State Government has models that are not viable for gyms. Unless we\u2019ve got a profitable sector, we won\u2019t have a sector,\u201d Ms Staley said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese are businesses that fulfill a need for our physical health and our mental health; delivering a public good. Without them, there would be massive gaps in our society surrounding both those things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Hodgett said gyms have shown they are trustworthy to operate safely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have COVID-safe plans, proper distancing and cleaning. The measures that have put on them have been harsh, and they\u2019ve been closed for seven months,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have some of the best contact tracing systems, with members scanning in and booking into classes, but some operators are still not sure what they can do in what space.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re listening to small businesses so we can go to the Government and say, why don\u2019t you try this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Member for Wendouree Juliana Addison said she has engaged \u201cextensively\u201d with local gym owners throughout lockdown and is mindful of how \u201cdifficult\u201d 2020 has been for operators and their community of members.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBallarat gym owners were delighted to be able to open earlier than the roadmap originally planned&#8230;and that gyms would be allowed up to 100 people, and 20 people per class [as of last Sunday]. They have missed the physical and mental benefits of being part of their gym,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe outbreak in South Australia has reminded us that this pandemic is not over.
