{"id":73097,"date":"2020-12-03T04:53:11","date_gmt":"2020-12-02T17:53:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=73097"},"modified":"2020-12-01T16:05:42","modified_gmt":"2020-12-01T05:05:42","slug":"olivia-wearne-grant-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/olivia-wearne-grant-tour\/","title":{"rendered":"Wearne\u2019s new book heads on Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>FORMER screenwriter Olivia Wearne has harnessed a love of novel writing to produce <em>The Grand Tour<\/em>, her new book released yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>The title is set in Ballarat, and has been a decade in the making, with Wearne putting pen to paper not long after she moved to the city with her husband 12 years ago.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Grand Tour<\/em> is a \u201cromp\u201d surrounding a group of recently retired characters and a \u201cnew freedom\u201d they\u2019re coming to terms with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf your 20s are about starting out, then your 60s are about starting over,\u201d Wearne said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYour relationship might have ended, your family\u2019s away, your career\u2019s come to an end and you\u2019re back to having all this free time, and basically, they don\u2019t deal with it very well; it\u2019s grownups behaving badly, up to lots of misadventures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo women who are best friends decide to do a tour of Australia. They get a young stowaway, and that runs amuck. Another character, Bernard is an ex-regional news presenter, so he has a certain amount of cultural cache&#8230;but becomes a local \u2018celebrity behaving badly.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wearne said Ballarat readers will enjoy the sense of regional community and loyalty in the story, and a few recognisable locations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot about local news, being a big fish in a small pond, and there are a few Ballarat places littered about like billboards, restaurants and bridges that people will know.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c&#8230;and obviously, the Ballarat weather,\u201d she laughed.<\/p>\n<p>Heading out of the challenging year that\u2019s been 2020, she said the book \u201cdoesn\u2019t take itself too seriously,\u201d and will be a fun summer read for those ready to relax.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so happy it\u2019s come out now, because it\u2019s a really feel-good read, it\u2019s a great bit of escapism, and the last thing we want this season is heavy, dark stuff. We all need to lighten up and breathe, and it is a breath of fresh air,\u201d Wearne said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s an idea of being in your own isolated world, belonging to place, and a sense of community. It\u2019s got a lot of fun, and a lot of colour.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Grand Tour<\/em> is out now.
