{"id":73234,"date":"2020-12-12T04:55:04","date_gmt":"2020-12-11T17:55:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=73234"},"modified":"2020-12-12T13:33:20","modified_gmt":"2020-12-12T02:33:20","slug":"gather-podcast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/gather-podcast\/","title":{"rendered":"Podcast Gathers stories, history and conversation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BOOKISH podcast, <em>Gather<\/em> is the latest audio project from Amy Tsilemanis, bringing people, ideas, and artforms together alongside her interest in the past, present and future.<\/p>\n<p>Launching her first episode last week, the bi-monthly releases will delve into history, how that connects to communities today, and how historical moments can impact the ways people move forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all about people being able to gather in different ways, which isn\u2019t always physical,\u201d Ms Tsilemanis said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe podcast gathers different voices, especially women and people who might be underrepresented in the media, with all the things I love; books, music, art and ideas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI interview people all around the world from one little room with the wonder of technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Part one of the first episode, <em>Book Arcade<\/em> explores just that; Cole\u2019s Books Arcade in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was an amazing bookshop that opened in 1883 run by E.W Cole, creator of <em>Cole\u2019s Funny Picture Book,<\/em>\u201d Ms Tsilemanis said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI interviewed people who\u2019ve written books about him. Richard Broinowski\u2019s book, <em>Under the Rainbow<\/em> came out this year, and Hilary Bell and Phillip Johnston were working on a musical to bring <em>Cole\u2019s Funny Picture Book<\/em> to life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe episode has snippets of the music that would have gone into this show, and Lisa Lang reads from her novel, <em>Utopian Man<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next instalment will look at travel, featuring Australian musician and creator of <em>Sounds from Home<\/em>, Belle Chen, who is based in London.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe look at ways to travel when you can\u2019t actually physically travel anywhere,\u201d Ms Tsilemanis said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring editing, I\u2019ve loved weaving in layers of music and archival sound. There are bits of local content and stories from around the world, so I hope it\u2019s internationally enjoyed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each episode includes two regular segments; \u201cthings found in books,\u201d and a look at an indie author or bookseller.<\/p>\n<p>A Regional Arts Victoria grant supported the set-up of the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt allowed me to get some mics and equipment. I have a sound engineer, music from a local musician, and got some branding done by a regional designer,\u201d Ms Tsilemanis said.<\/p>\n<p>She is creating collages to match each episode and engage listeners in another way.
