{"id":73409,"date":"2020-12-18T04:57:55","date_gmt":"2020-12-17T17:57:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=73409"},"modified":"2020-12-18T08:55:48","modified_gmt":"2020-12-17T21:55:48","slug":"brown-hill-community-newsletter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/brown-hill-community-newsletter\/","title":{"rendered":"Stories of Brown Hill awarded"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE <em>Brown Hill Community Newsletter<\/em> was recognised in three awards categories at the recent Community Newspapers Association of Victoria conference.<\/p>\n<p><em>Abrar learns to swim in the Brown Hill Pool<\/em>, a story from <em>BHCN\u2019s<\/em> 23rd edition, won Best Sports Reporting, with editing by Sarah Greenwood-Smith.<\/p>\n<p><em>BHCN<\/em> was also \u2018finalist two\u2019 in Best Feature Story for their piece about retiring kindergarten teacher, Christine Sullivan, and in Best Photograph, with Jimmy Rushton\u2019s shot of his family; Hazel, Victoria and Fletcher Rushton.<\/p>\n<p>Abrar Dham\u2019s experiences learning to swim as an adult from a diverse community \u201creally touched the judges\u2019 hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNever underestimate the power of peoples\u2019 stories and how much they can inspire people, especially people from an African community like mine, or more traditional communities,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was embarrassed that I couldn\u2019t swim, but realise lots of people from different cultural backgrounds can\u2019t either.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHopefully this will inspire others to learn. There shouldn\u2019t be that stigma.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Traditionally, the newsletter has been a way to connect and inform Brown Hill, but now five years old, the committee is beginning to engage with more local issues and active residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re now showing people how they can get involved in community projects and give feedback, and in between editions, we use our Facebook page to continue to engage,\u201d Ms Greenwood-Smith said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Newsletter has grown bigger and bigger because there is just such a need for it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Buninyong &amp; District Community News\u2019<\/em> Barry Fitzgerald and Gayle Adams were also honoured with a CNAV award for Best Editorial Comment.<\/p>\n<p><em>BHCN<\/em>, its directory and online hub were collectively recent community category finalists in the Keep Victoria Beautiful awards.<\/p>\n<p>A Ballarat Community News Publications Network has launched, uniting local newsletters that are all individually CNAV members, and connecting the district\u2019s likeminded volunteers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Brown Hill Community Newsletter was recognised in three awards categories at the recent Community Newspapers Association of Victoria conference.
