{"id":73620,"date":"2020-12-24T04:58:38","date_gmt":"2020-12-23T17:58:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=73620"},"modified":"2020-12-24T07:58:06","modified_gmt":"2020-12-23T20:58:06","slug":"lake-lighting-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/lake-lighting-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"City trials lake lighting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TWO temporary electric lights have been installed along Lake Wendouree\u2019s Steve Moneghetti Track as part of the City\u2019s lake lighting system trial.<\/p>\n<p>Over the coming months the municipality is asking nearby residents, and those running and walking the lake\u2019s track, to give their feedback on the design, the varying levels of brightness, and effectiveness before the City decides on a permanent set for the entire track.<\/p>\n<p>With $2.5 million worth of State Government funding, the project\u2019s first stage will eventually see 240 lights around Lake Wendouree, 25 metres apart. As part of a second stage, further lights along Morrison Street beside Loreto College will create a lighting corridor to Victoria Park.<\/p>\n<p>Member for Wendouree, Juliana Addison said the plan is to give people more time to exercise, whether they are early risers or head out in the evening.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our winters it gets very dark, very early, and the sun doesn\u2019t get out of bed very often, but we want people to stay healthy and active, so we will give them every possible encouragement to get out of bed on those cold mornings,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the heart of Ballarat and we want to make sure more people can enjoy it every day of the year for longer. It will be safer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ms Addison said environmental protection is \u201cfront of mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese lights are going to be designed to take into account issues affecting our incredible local wildlife and ecology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>City of Ballarat mayor, Cr Daniel Moloney said the lake is a challenging location to work with when installing technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s significant heritage on the Botanical Gardens side of the lake and some beautiful old historic trees which we can\u2019t damage the root structure of,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn many cases, we need to bore under the tree roots to make sure they\u2019re not damaged, and of course, the lights need to be functional and safe, so there\u2019s a fair bit to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe wildlife is predominantly around the water\u2019s edge and in the water, so the direction of the lighting directly on the path, rather than the whole area, will be a key factor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/mysay.ballarat.vic.gov.au\"><strong>mysay.ballarat.vic.gov.au<\/strong><\/a> to participate in community consultation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TWO temporary electric lights have been installed along Lake Wendouree\u2019s Steve Moneghetti Track as part of the City\u2019s lake lighting system trial.
