{"id":73814,"date":"2021-01-15T04:55:43","date_gmt":"2021-01-14T17:55:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=73814"},"modified":"2021-01-07T13:43:26","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T02:43:26","slug":"finding-inspiration-in-covid-zoom-calls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/finding-inspiration-in-covid-zoom-calls\/","title":{"rendered":"Finding inspiration in COVID Zoom calls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>STARTING off the new creative calendar, the Ballarat Art Gallery has unveiled the latest Backspace exhibition, this time featuring by Marcia King\u2019s exploration of challenges around communicating during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Titled I think you\u2019re on mute, the exhibit showcases a series of portrait style drawings of people King came into contact virtually over lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe exhibition is about digital communication and what we all had to go through in 2020,\u201d Ms King said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe number of meetings I had where someone said, \u2018I think you\u2019re on mute\u2019, or my \u2018internet\u2019s dropped out\u2019 was funny to me, so the whole thing is a commentary on that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlso, the grid of sketches is inspired by the concept of the Zoom call where they are all sitting there squinting into the camera.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turning to her own devices, at the beginning of the COVID crises King said she planned to use virtual meetings and digital photos as the basis of her inspiration for the series of drawings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the first lockdown started, I put out a call to social media and asked people if they wanted to be involved and I got hundreds of people reach out and send me photos,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sent them a bunch of instructions they had to follow, sometimes I would meet with people online and draw them live\u2026 I got over 1900 images in total and there are 74 drawings in the show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone has been so affected by it so to capture my friends and followers online and their experiences throughout as well as mine has been really important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Working day-to-day in IT herself, Ms King said transforming digital images and video into sketches was a truly cathartic process for her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo translate digital into that analogue medium was a really great experience and being able to create during lockdown was a great way to get through it all as well,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI get to leave my normal IT life in the digital realm and then get into a more creative space so it\u2019s been a great way to get through 2020.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t mind if people have a bit of a laugh at some of the titles I\u2019ve given them as well, they\u2019re all pretty common catchphrases of the digital experience and your average Zoom call.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While entry to the Gallery is free, due to COVID guidelines, to see the exhibit it\u2019s encouraged to book a ticket online at <a href=\"https:\/\/artgalleryofballarat.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>artgalleryofballarat.com.au<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>STARTING off the new creative calendar, the Ballarat Art Gallery has unveiled the latest Backspace exhibition, this time featuring by Marcia King\u2019s exploration of challenges around communicating during the pandemic.
