{"id":74238,"date":"2021-02-04T04:55:29","date_gmt":"2021-02-03T17:55:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=74238"},"modified":"2021-02-02T14:38:18","modified_gmt":"2021-02-02T03:38:18","slug":"roadnats-coffee-cup-art","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/roadnats-coffee-cup-art\/","title":{"rendered":"Coffee cups celebrate cycling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GETTING into the spirit of this week\u2019s Federation University Road National Championships, twenty-five hospitality venues will serve takeaway coffees in cycling-themed cups.<\/p>\n<p>Five local artists have been commissioned by the City of Ballarat to create designs referencing Ballarat, Buninyong and bike-riding for the RoadNats Coffee Cup Art series.<\/p>\n<p>Marce King, Lucy Frith, Bec Warr, Elaine Tso and Pauline O&#8217;Shannessy-Dowling have each illustrated an image, rending their work in varying ways; digitally, with paint or a pen.<\/p>\n<p>Frith said she is \u201cover the moon\u201d to be part of the cycling celebration, featuring athletes in motion, the Mining Exchange, the Buninyong Town Hall, farmland, and Mount Buninyong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I illustrate for the Ballarat region, I love capturing the sense of community and passion that we have for our people, our history, and our overall connective atmosphere that we have created for ourselves,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see this through our weekend farmer\u2019s markets, live music events, people catching up for coffee in the morning, and our love for cycling.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74243\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74243\" style=\"width: 279px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-74243\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/Road-Nationals-jpeg1-279x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"279\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74243\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pauline O&#8217;Shannessy-Dowling\u2019s design.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve enjoyed the process of creating this atmosphere through the people cycling, our heritage buildings, and our regional environment that has kept us close-knit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;Shannessy-Dowling\u2019s pieces often focus on the urban landscape, so this artistic challenge worked well with her process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI used the Town Hall, which is iconic. Mount Buninyong has such a distinctive shape which I\u2019ve always loved, so I used that, and I went for a circular composition to easily build in the wheel of a bike,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe red stripes refer to the spokes of a wheel, and I\u2019ve made the outside look like a road too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a fun project. Art and sport have traditionally clinked up against each other, not occupying the same space, but to me they have a strong bond, and being active myself, I think it\u2019s quite natural.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tso opted for &#8220;clean, friendly and calm&#8221; imagery.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_74241\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-74241\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-74241\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/Road-Nationals-Coffee-Cup-Art-FINAL-w-Trim-e1612236966474-300x297.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/Road-Nationals-Coffee-Cup-Art-FINAL-w-Trim-e1612236966474-300x297.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/Road-Nationals-Coffee-Cup-Art-FINAL-w-Trim-e1612236966474-768x760.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/Road-Nationals-Coffee-Cup-Art-FINAL-w-Trim-e1612236966474.jpg 770w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-74241\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elaine Tso\u2019s design.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;Coming up with a design solution is always enjoyable. In ways it\u2019s a journey for the brain, you kind of just go with it until you feel like you\u2019ve hit your destination,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In ways, I\u2019m surprised to be involved in such a big project.
