{"id":75137,"date":"2021-03-21T04:57:37","date_gmt":"2021-03-20T17:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=75137"},"modified":"2021-03-18T20:16:01","modified_gmt":"2021-03-18T09:16:01","slug":"bad-apple-ben-sanders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/bad-apple-ben-sanders\/","title":{"rendered":"Anti-hero Apple anything but sweet"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LOCAL illustrator Ben Sanders\u2019 latest literary collaboration, <em>Bad Apple<\/em>, is out in bookstores now.<\/p>\n<p>The children\u2019s picture storybook, written by Cornwall-based English author Huw Lewis Jones and brought to life by Sanders\u2019 visual art, is full of fun, but doesn\u2019t scrimp on darkness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019ve got a character that starts out bad in the story, normally they learn a lesson and by the end they turn around, but this Apple is an anti-hero that gets worse as he goes along,\u201d Sanders laughed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBad Apple is doing bad things to other fruits along the way, but he does get his come-uppance, so it\u2019s a little bit of a darker twist than a normal children\u2019s book, which is refreshing, and opens things up for our second and third books in the series.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75138\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75138\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75138\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/Bad-Apple-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75138\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bad Apple is on the shelves of bookstores internationally. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI do enjoy having something unexpected in a book. I like to put twists in, and I\u2019m glad that Huw and I decided not to have a neat, tidy ending. Our character was evil enough that we felt we didn\u2019t have to protect the guy, and people would be okay with it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bad Apple has been released worldwide in \u201cmost territories\u201d and will soon be out in six languages other than English.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the biggest book launch I\u2019ve had, as far as reach, and it\u2019s a lot bigger than I expected when I first worked on this project at the beginning of last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the first time that I\u2019d only illustrated a book, because usually I write them and illustrate them,\u201d Sanders said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough we\u2019re far apart, Huw and I collaborate closely, chatting everyday via WhatsApp and comparing notes. As a writer, I comment on his words, and he\u2019s an art director so comments intelligently on my illustrations and design work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another title, <em>Apple Grumble<\/em> is set to follow and will come out about this time in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Sanders is starting his illustrations for the third book of the series, where Bad Apple attends his grandmother, Granny Smith\u2019s 100th birthday.<\/p>\n<p><em>Bad Apple<\/em> is out in most major bookstores, including Ballarat\u2019s Collins Booksellers.<\/p>\n<p>An official launch will be held on Saturday, 27 March at the Workshop Caf\u00e9, Ballarat central.
