{"id":75274,"date":"2021-03-27T09:30:30","date_gmt":"2021-03-26T22:30:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=75274"},"modified":"2021-03-27T09:30:30","modified_gmt":"2021-03-26T22:30:30","slug":"it-aint-over-till-its-clover","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/it-aint-over-till-its-clover\/","title":{"rendered":"It ain\u2019t over till it\u2019s clover"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A TRADITION was revived outside Town Hall on St Patrick\u2019s Day, with a long-awaited flag raising event last week.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_75276\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-75276\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-75276\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/DSC_0063-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-75276\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Flying high: The Ballarat &amp; District Irish Association were ecstatic to see their flag flying above Victoria Square.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>On Wednesday, 17 March, the Ballarat &amp; District Irish Association gathered at Victoria Square to celebrate the flying of the Irish flag, for the first time in over ten years.<\/p>\n<p>The green, white and orange colours soared gracefully in the breeze, as rousing speeches were heard around the flagpole.<\/p>\n<p>Brian Shanahan, president of the Ballarat &amp; District Irish Association, said the flag raising was a \u201csymbolic\u201d commemoration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a formal recognition of the Irish and Irish Australian contributions to Ballarat and the surrounding areas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important that we recognise Irish Australian history with events such as this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Irish Association aims to increase the observation and preservation of Irish culture, by incorporating intellectual events with excitement and fun.<\/p>\n<p>Also in attendance was City of Ballarat mayor Cr Daniel Moloney, who said it was a privilege to take part in the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s probably been more than a decade since we\u2019ve last raised the Irish flag on St Patrick\u2019s Day, so it\u2019s a pity that this tradition has been lost,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great to revive it again. But with a surname like Moloney, I certainly couldn\u2019t let that one pass.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event coincided with the city\u2019s Harmony Fest celebrations, which honours Ballarat\u2019s multicultural and diverse population.<\/p>\n<p>Harmony Fest runs from 12 March to 28 March and is centred around the United Nation\u2019s\u00a0International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on 21 March.<\/p>\n<p>Cr Moloney said he encourages everyone to join in on the fortnight-long festivities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAustralia is a very diverse country, and Ballarat reflects that,\u201d he said. \u201cHarmony Fest is all about celebrating different cultures and identities, including Irish heritage.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A TRADITION was revived outside Town Hall on St Patrick\u2019s Day, with a long-awaited flag raising event last week.
