AFTER breaking out on his own, new solo artist Tim Currie is gearing up for a big year of original releases and live shows.<\/p>\n
While also currently a member of Ballarat surf rock band, Gangz, Currie said music has always played a huge part in his life.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy dad played guitar and I picked it up as soon as I could hold one basically but I was never particularly good at it until I took it more seriously in high school,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a lot more work involved when you\u2019re doing it yourself, it\u2019s easier when there\u2019s a big crew and we write together as a band but when you\u2019re solo there\u2019s a lot of writing, time on the guitar and the computer, it\u2019s fun though.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll generally do demos in my room, spend some time getting it looking nice, then I\u2019ll get some of my friends, also musicians, to give me some critiquing and listen over it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Since his debut, Currie has released two singles. Lonely for You is a poppier single and High Rise which is a little more of a soulful, country sound.<\/p>\n
Both tracks are available on streaming platforms and also he\u2019s currently working to finalise a series of others.<\/p>\n
With his debut gig supporting Jess Locke at Volta earlier this year initially cancelled, Currie said he played a backyard show for some of his friends to test out some of the singles live.<\/p>\n
\u201cThankfully, it got rescheduled to 23 April, so that will be really, fun supporting Jess Locke, big fan of her stuff,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll be playing all original songs, hopefully with a full band as well which will be great.\u201d<\/p>\n
Having received a plethora of positive feedback from friends, family and peers, Currie said having written and produced the songs during lockdown, it was nice to have some good come out of a devastating year.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe two songs that I\u2019ve released, I spent a lot of time on then, trying to figure out what worked and what didn\u2019t work until they completely morphed into something different,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI brought two out at once because this is my first release solo ever, I wanted a little bit more perspective than just one song but it was hard to choose which ones to release.<\/p>\n
\u201cDuring the first lockdown when I was writing these songs, I was listening to obscene amounts of Leonard Cohen and Father John Misty, and I was trying to write the best song I possibly good.\u201d<\/p>\n
Utilising his creative connections to produce the art work for the releases, Currie said he got in contact with his sister, Emma Currie, who is an established artist to help him out.<\/p>\n
\u201cI basically called Emma trying to figure out what to do with my art, with the hopes she would offer to do it and she did, luckily,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI sent her all the songs and I also did a bit of a visual board of images that I thought fitted the vibe which included lots of still lifes and we ended up going with a still life sort of image.<\/p>\n
\u201cShe had some great ideas of what to do and it turned out perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n
