BALLARAT school and community rowing clubs performed strongly at last month\u2019s 2021 Aon Australian Rowing Championships on Tasmania\u2019s Lake Barrington.<\/p>\n
St Patrick\u2019s College\u2019s top crew won gold, becoming the schoolboys\u2019 coxed fours national champions, over silver medal winners, Ballarat Grammar.<\/p>\n
Grammar\u2019s boys\u2019 firsts raced with Melbourne University Boat Club and Wesley College in a composite eight, winning gold in the under 19 men\u2019s eight final. In the following sprint quads over 500 metres, Grammar\u2019s boys\u2019 firsts won gold, while their girls\u2019 firsts won silver.<\/p>\n
Ballarat Clarendon College\u2019s girls\u2019 firsts won a silver medal in the coxed fours. Ballarat City Rowing Club\u2019s Hamish Rowlands and Osborne Willison took silver in the club men\u2019s double scull.<\/p>\n
For Ballarat Grammar\u2019s director of rowing Sam Pullin, the local presence at nationals showcased the sport\u2019s growth in recent years, and how capable the city\u2019s up-and-coming athletes are, especially scullers.<\/p>\n
He said Ballarat rowing is \u201cwell and truly back up and going at a high standard\u201d post-drought.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a huge development of sculling happening in the Ballarat school programs. We can match people, and nationals offers strong data to justify why sculling in our school programs is of benefit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBallarat as a whole, clubs and schools, raced throughout the week. We had single scullers from Ballarat City and Wendouree, school kids rowing for those clubs, and doing really well.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf crews didn\u2019t medal, they were very close to doing that, and the commentators made note that some events wouldn\u2019t have gone ahead without Ballarat schools and clubs. It\u2019s a really exciting time.\u201d<\/p>\n
BCRC also nabbed bronze in the open men\u2019s coxless quadruple scull sprint, Grammar\u2019s Hugh Bond and Will Clarke took home bronze in the under 19 double scull, while St Patrick\u2019s College were also awarded a bronze medal in the under 19 coxed fours.<\/p>\n
Wendouree Ballarat Rowing Club was represented by under 19 boys\u2019 and girls\u2019 fours, a schoolboy single sculler, and an under 17 boys\u2019 quad. Lake Barrington also saw Loreto College\u2019s open division one crew.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
