{"id":76056,"date":"2021-05-03T12:52:23","date_gmt":"2021-05-03T02:52:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=76056"},"modified":"2021-05-06T16:39:29","modified_gmt":"2021-05-06T06:39:29","slug":"first-independent-regional-publisher-signs-with-google","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/first-independent-regional-publisher-signs-with-google\/","title":{"rendered":"First independent regional publisher signs with Google"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>REGIONAL media company Times News Group has joined national and regional news providers including News Corp, Australian Community Media, Seven West Media and Nine to sign a publisher agreement with Google News Showcase.<\/p>\n<p>The Torquay-based company, which has satellite offices in Bendigo and Ballarat, will curate news content for Google\u2019s News Showcase which the search engine launched in February.<\/p>\n<p>The deal will significantly boost Times News Group\u2019s investment in public interest journalism, increasing hyper-local news content across its growing list of publications.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-76059\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/05\/TNG1_MarkCasey_WarickBrown_NickAbbott-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/>Times News Group Directors Mark Casey, Warick Brown and Nick Abbott strategically grew a free Torquay-centric community newspaper to seven mastheads; <em>Surf Coast Times, Bellarine Times, Armstrong Creek Times, Ballarat Times, Golden Plains Times<\/em> and more recently expanded with the <em>Geelong Times and Bendigo Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Managing director Warick Brown praised Google for respecting and understanding the importance of penning an agreement with regional publishers saying the deal highlighted the importance of community focused news.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle have been nothing but supportive and respectful of the energy and effort that goes into publishing hyper-local community content,\u201d Mr Brown said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGoogle understands the authority regional newspapers have in the communities they serve, and by providing us with a platform on Google News Showcase they will help take our content further and reach larger audiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir financial support is a benefit to us and public interest journalism.
