{"id":76890,"date":"2021-05-27T13:51:03","date_gmt":"2021-05-27T03:51:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=76890"},"modified":"2021-05-27T13:55:53","modified_gmt":"2021-05-27T03:55:53","slug":"ballarats-weak-positive-case-not-transmissible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/ballarats-weak-positive-case-not-transmissible\/","title":{"rendered":"Ballarat\u2019s \u2018weak positive\u2019 case not transmissible"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BALLARAT Health Services has provided an update on a <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/potential-bhs-covid-case-under-investigation\/\">potential COVID-19 case<\/a> in the city.<\/p>\n<p>BHS head of infectious diseases Raquel Cowan has said the \u201cweak positive\u201d test result probably wasn\u2019t contagious to BHS staff, patients or the wider community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still going around the absolute confirmatory process around that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can actually say there wasn\u2019t a risk to the BHS healthcare workers, or patients in the hospital at the time, or the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With it not completely clear that the case wasn\u2019t transmissible, Ms Cowan sought to explain what a weak positive detection meant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we mean by a weak positive is that we\u2019re looking at various target for the disease and there\u2019s usually two to three targets for each test,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of those levels [in the Ballarat case] is up a little bit. There\u2019s several reasons for that to be a weak positive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe first one can be there is a person with an early infection. The other thing that can happen is\u2026 that weak positive can be because they\u2019ve previously had the disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we need to do is confirm they are true positive. There\u2019s a couple of tests that we can do in the hospital ourselves, but\u2026 what we always need to do is regardless of whether test is a weak positive or a strong positive is actually get confirmation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With speculation in the community about the case, BHS CEO Dale Fraser said people should think about the person at the centre of the detection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBehind the speculation, the wild rumour, whatever, is a person who\u2019s undergoing care and they deserve and should be expected to receive privacy for their care,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not a very large community, so clearly any wild speculations about the care of this individual or their medical conditions is detrimental to their health and our community\u2019s health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe encourage everyone to be respectful of patients\u2019 privacy.
