{"id":77407,"date":"2021-06-24T04:56:37","date_gmt":"2021-06-23T18:56:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=77407"},"modified":"2021-06-22T16:34:08","modified_gmt":"2021-06-22T06:34:08","slug":"agb-stagecraft-catalogue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/agb-stagecraft-catalogue\/","title":{"rendered":"Stagecraft catalogue best in show"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE catalogue for the Art Gallery of Ballarat\u2019s <em>David Noonan:<\/em> <em>Stagecraft<\/em> exhibition has won two Museums Australasia Multimedia and Publication Design Awards.<\/p>\n<p>Designed by Ben Cox, the 20-page booklet, bound by hand, took out the small exhibition catalogue category and was Best in Show for Publications.<\/p>\n<p>It includes reproductions of Noonan\u2019s artwork, an original limited-edition print, and an essay from AGB curator Julie McLaren.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe day the show was due to open, it was closed due to a COVID lockdown, so it\u2019s been really nice at the end of all this to receive the award. David is excited about it as well,\u201d Cox said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_77409\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-77409\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-77409\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/06\/IMG_1721-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-77409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The award-winning publication is tactile and hand-bound.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI feel really honoured to have won a prize at the Awards which are so prestigious across Australia and New Zealand. It was unexpected, and to win Best in Show was a nice surprise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whenever the Gallery develops and publishes an exhibition catalogue, Cox works closely with the artist, or multiple creatives featured.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid is based in the UK, so we started the conversation 12 months before we published the catalogue. It is a collaboration when you\u2019re presenting an artist\u2019s work, so I worked really closely with him to realise this.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis works are large, textured and tactile, so that\u2019s why the catalogue is in a big format and textured,\u201d Cox said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of thoughtfulness and consideration went into the design of the publication; the font, the paper, and how much space there is between the elements. The scale was really important.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Art Gallery of Ballarat director Louise Tegart said her team is proud to be recognised for in-house design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid Noonan is one of Australia\u2019s most significant artists, and the catalogue is a testament to the beauty of his work,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe win continues the Gallery\u2019s history of receiving MAPDA Awards over the last few years.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE catalogue for the Art Gallery of Ballarat\u2019s David Noonan: Stagecraft exhibition has won two Museums Australasia Multimedia and Publication Design Awards.
