TOP vets are warning to be on the lookout for signs of a new dog disease after a Horsham hound, which came from the Northern Territory, was diagnosed with ehrlichiosis.<\/p>\n
The disease was first discovered in the Kimberley region in mid-2020 but has since made its way into most states and territories and is spread by brown ticks.<\/p>\n
Victoria\u2019s chief veterinary officer Dr Graeme Cooke said common signs of ehrlichiosis include fever, lethargy, eye changes, abnormal bleeding, bruising and swelling.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen detected early, antibiotics may be used to treat the disease,\u201d Dr Cooke said.<\/p>\n
\u201cPrevention is crucial as there is no vaccine for the disease. Protect your dogs from ehrlichiosis by regularly checking them for ticks, using effective tick control and seeking veterinary advice promptly if they become unwell.<\/p>\n
\u201cBe particularly vigilant if you\u2019re taking your dog out bush and travelling interstate.\u201d<\/p>\n
The disease should be reported to the Emergency Animal Disease Watch Hotline on 1800 675 888 if suspected.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf your dog is unwell or you find any abnormal bumps or ticks, make sure you promptly arrange to take your dog to your vet. Discuss with your vet the testing system in place for ehrlichiosis in Victoria,\u201d Dr Cooke said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
