{"id":78668,"date":"2021-08-19T04:45:04","date_gmt":"2021-08-18T18:45:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=78668"},"modified":"2021-08-19T09:00:05","modified_gmt":"2021-08-18T23:00:05","slug":"westvic-academy-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/sport\/westvic-academy-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Academy athletes set to celebrate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE FedUni WestVic Academy of Sport plans to hold their annual awards dinner next month.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than awarding an individual Athlete of the Year as the academy has done in the past, the WVAS board will celebrate the perseverance of their young sportspeople, their coaches and families throughout the challenges of the last 18 months.<\/p>\n<p>The Academy\u2019s executive officer Shenae Keleher said individuals who have reached an elite level of performance will also be recognised with commendations, based on their results and additional criteria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pandemic has reduced the number of performances possible, particularly in international competitions, but the majority of our athletes are at a national level,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_78670\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-78670\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-78670\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/08\/IMG_1670-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-78670\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Shenae Keleher.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBeing able to compete nationally is still pretty cool, especially within the last two years, so we\u2019re going to recognise that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe support many diverse sports with achievements that are very different, so we want to run the awards in the fairest way possible. We look forward to a great evening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The awards dinner is planned for the Ballarat Golf Club on Wednesday, 1 September &#8211; COVID-19 restrictions permitting &#8211; in partnership with the Ballarat Sportsmen\u2019s Club.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of our athletes are invited for the night, and this year we have Lisa Alexander AM as our guest speaker; the previous Diamonds netball coach for Australia,\u201d Ms Keleher said.<\/p>\n<p>The WVAS board plans to reintroduce the Athlete of the Year Award in 2022, reviewing athletes\u2019 results and performance from the period of January 2021 to June 2022.<\/p>\n<p>The FedUni WestVic Academy of Sport annual awards dinner was originally scheduled for two weeks ago on Wednesday, 4 August but was postponed due to the state\u2019s sixth pandemic lockdown.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE FedUni WestVic Academy of Sport plans to hold their annual awards dinner next month.
