PARKINSON\u2019S Victoria is encouraging people to get behind those living with the condition this October.<\/p>\n
The 27forParkinson\u2019s challenge was created to show support for the 27,000 people in Victoria living with Parkinson\u2019s disease, the second most common neurological condition behind dementia.<\/p>\n
Ballarat icon and long distance runner Steve Moneghetti has shown his support for the initiative after his mum was diagnosed with Parkinson\u2019s 15 years ago.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhilst it was initially a relief to know what was happening with Mum\u2019s health, it has been a challenging journey,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMum is 90 now and the deterioration in her quality of life has been more gradual than we all thought, which is a positive, but as she has got older the care required is increasing significantly.<\/p>\n
\u201cHaving a life ruled by constant medication and the side effects of any other sickness medication has taken its toll on all of us, but most particularly mum and dad.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Parkinson\u2019s Victoria, COVID-19 has had adverse effects on people living with the condition, with interruptions to health services and programs \u201caffecting people and in some cases, worsening symptoms\u201d.<\/p>\n
The annual 27forParkinson\u2019s event has been expanded this year with multiple challenges involving exercise, social connection and self-care.<\/p>\n
Participants can choose to walk, run or workout; call or connect with a friend or family member; or give something up for 27 days, starting 1 October.<\/p>\n
