A FOUR-metre lime tree with meaning is a new part of the landscape at BGT\u2019s Barkly Square, the site of the former Ballarat East Town Hall gardens.<\/p>\n
With the assistance of BGT landscaping students and City of Ballarat parks and gardens staff, the tree has been planted to thank and recognise local resident Bob Carmichael.<\/p>\n
A volunteer, Mr Carmichael has taken the initiative to maintain the historical outdoor space.<\/p>\n
His projects have included the removal of ivy and blackberries from terraced beds at the site which BGT and the Department of Education are now custodians of.<\/p>\n
City of Ballarat mayor Cr Daniel Moloney said the gardens are public, but a \u201chidden gem,\u201d and the community owes a lot to Mr Carmichael\u2019s commitment and service.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe work of Bob Carmichael, clearing and pruning the terraces of the town hall site, has resulted in a magnificent reminder of what is still a very historic and beautiful garden,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBob\u2019s tireless devotion to helping care for and nurture the gardens is something we are all indebted to. It leaves a legacy that so many will enjoy in the years to come.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to value our heritage and we need to promote and implement environmental sustainability. The planting of this tree is a thank you to Bob and his work that supports our goals and values as a city.\u201d<\/p>\n
The City of Ballarat\u2019s Exceptional Tree Register includes two at the Ballarat East Town Hall gardens, planted by the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall, and York, in 1901.<\/p>\n
Mr Carmichael\u2019s tree has been planted next to another lime, which is estimated to date back to the 1860s.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
