PUPILS at smaller schools across the region are set to benefit from an increase in their allocation of funds as part of the Tutors in Schools program.<\/p>\n
Under the scheme, which was introduced as a way of helping students catch up on their learning following remote teaching due to COVID-19, smaller schools will see their minimum funding rise to $25,000.<\/p>\n
One such school to benefit is Mount Egerton Primary.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are very excited to receive additional funding so the tutoring program can continue in 2022,\u201d said principal Tegan Bell.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith the first round of funding we\u2019ve been able to provide support and learning catch-up to those who have needed it, as well as extending some students in reading, writing and maths.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mount Egerton is a small rural school with 14 pupils and like all other students across the state, when lockdown orders required it, learning was done from home via the internet.<\/p>\n
Christine McShane is a reasonably recent graduate teacher and has been working with the kids at Mount Ege, helping them as required.<\/p>\n
She said the opportunity to take part in the Tutors in Schools program has not only helped the pupils, but also increased her professional ability.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s given me some really good experience, especially looking at data and where students are placed and where they need to be along the curriculum,\u201d Ms McShane said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s given me a lot of variety as well, with different experiences with numeracy and literacy.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe lessons themselves are a lot more focused and intensive compared to when you\u2019re in the classroom and at the point of need.\u201d<\/p>\n
Local state parliamentarian, Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle, visited Mount Egerton last Friday.<\/p>\n
She praised the work done by teaching staff like Ms McShane.<\/p>\n
