{"id":82034,"date":"2022-01-27T04:46:51","date_gmt":"2022-01-26T17:46:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=82034"},"modified":"2022-01-27T07:43:59","modified_gmt":"2022-01-26T20:43:59","slug":"rutherglen-regatta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/sport\/rutherglen-regatta\/","title":{"rendered":"Rutherglen rowers race for gold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Ballarat rowing community took north-eastern Victoria by storm earlier in the month, competing in the Murray Rowing Association\u2019s annual Rutherglen Regatta.<\/p>\n<p>Ballarat City and Wendouree-Ballarat rowing clubs made a particular splash, taking away 18 wins in total.<\/p>\n<p>BCRC were awarded first in 14 events, and seven second places throughout the competition, following 74 entries and 30 finals appearances, while WBRC\u2019s beginner female coxed quad won gold twice, and 14-year-old Jovie Skewes achieved first in her single scull C final.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82037\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82037\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82037\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/01\/Keylah-and-Aleesha-Walker-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82037\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">State champions: BCRC\u2019s Keylah and Aleesha Walker won gold in their double scull A final. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Thirteen-year-old WBRC sculler Mia Woodburn was part of the winning coxed quad and placed second while racing solo in the under-15 single scull event.<\/p>\n<p>Woodburn has been rowing for two years, but said her beginner quad is brand new.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve only just put the crew together. We didn\u2019t expect to win at all,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a really fun regatta, and I was grateful to be up there with all my friends. Everyone, including the other competitors on the starting line, were so kind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lake at Rutherglen was calm and easy, whereas Lake Wendouree is often windy and choppy.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82036\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82036\" style=\"width: 240px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82036\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/01\/IMG_1553-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82036\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ballarat City returned to their shed with 14 Rutherglen wins. Many masters rowers experienced their first-ever race and participated alongside their own children.<\/p>\n<p>There were even some state champions from Ballarat City, with sisters Keylah and Aleesha Walker winning gold in their double scull A final. Aleesha also took home six additional medals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe recipe for Rutherglen is to have fun, and any winning success is a bonus,\u201d Ms Clarke said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Rutherglen course also has a big bend in the middle of it, so that\u2019s part of its charm, but it\u2019s also entirely frustrating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe just go there to have a great time, and every year we come back beaming because it\u2019s been such a fun adventure.
