{"id":82301,"date":"2022-02-10T04:48:02","date_gmt":"2022-02-09T17:48:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=82301"},"modified":"2022-02-10T08:59:39","modified_gmt":"2022-02-09T21:59:39","slug":"elite-rowers-return-for-race-with-meaning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/sport\/elite-rowers-return-for-race-with-meaning\/","title":{"rendered":"Elite rowers return for race with meaning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>TWO of Ballarat\u2019s greatest sporting exports, rowers Katrina Werry and Lucy Stephan, took to Lake Wendouree last Saturday in support of the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>Both Olympians raced as a pair in the under 21 female coxed fours event at the Wendouree Ballarat JG King Homes Regatta.<\/p>\n<p>They gave the field a 10-second head start, and came in second by the same margin to the Ballarat Clarendon College\u2019s top women\u2019s team.<\/p>\n<p>But for Werry and Stephan, it wasn\u2019t so much about the result as supporting those coming up in the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is where it started for us,\u201d Stephan said. \u201cIt\u2019s really special for us to come back and race where it all began.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Werry added, \u201cIt is very important for us to give back to the sport that gave so much to us, particularly when we were coming through.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor us to be able to have these rare opportunities, it is really important to think about the wider community, but is doesn\u2019t happen a lot, the stars aligned for today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite hailing from traditional rivals, Werry went to College and 2021 Tokyo gold medallist Stephan was at Grammar, the pair are now best friends, living and training together.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_82303\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-82303\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-82303\" src=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/IMG_9931-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-82303\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Werry and Stephan gave the other rowers a 10-second head start.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Both gave up time at the national squad training camp in Penrith, and surprisingly, it was only Stephan\u2019s third time rowing on Lake Wendouree.<\/p>\n<p>Recently Werry had also been helping guide the rowers from her alma mater.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been down to help out, just to give them some ideas and take a look a couple of times, which was pretty special for me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I\u2019ve developed a bit of a relationship with those girls and I\u2019m really excited, and proud of them, and it\u2019s brilliant to see them out in front by so much.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Skipper of the winning Ballarat Clarendon College coxed four squad, Ellie McClure, said Werry\u2019s time with the school\u2019s rowers was meaningful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just so fun to be able to race against such ana elite crew.
