LOOKING at all she\u2019s collected and stored over many years, Cora Wierenga recently made the decision to have a big garage sale.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve never been motivated enough to do it, but I thought, I could invite Rural Australians for Refugees to be involved, and they can have the money raised,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Cricket gear, a pushbike, building materials, antique and vintage furniture, a cot, art, children\u2019s toys, and a boogie board are just some of the items that will be available on the day.<\/p>\n
To be held from 8am on Saturday, 19 March, RAR spokesperson David MacPhail said the garage sale will help refugees and people seeking asylum that the organisation routinely works with.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor that kind of support, we have to raise money. For electricity and water bills, rent, school fees, those day-to-day routine costs, we have to create an opportunity for people to contribute,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe depend on people like Cora, our big network of people, personal friends, supporters, community groups, book clubs and so on, who will come to these kinds of events, and come to the fore when we\u2019re fundraising.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey all come together and always have a way of helping. With the garage sale, at least 30 of them so far have dropped stuff off, and often during a drop-off, people will even buy something on the way out before the official day of the sale.\u201d<\/p>\n
The drop-off period for sale items has concluded. The RAR garage sale will be held on Skipton Street between Dawson and Urquhart streets. Balloons will be out from 8am.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
