{"id":83586,"date":"2022-04-18T04:56:03","date_gmt":"2022-04-17T17:56:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=83586"},"modified":"2022-04-12T15:56:23","modified_gmt":"2022-04-12T04:56:23","slug":"ballarat-anzacs-arch-avenue-talk","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/ballarat-anzacs-arch-avenue-talk\/","title":{"rendered":"All about the Arch and Avenue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A SERIES of talks this month are complementing the Ballaarat Mechanics\u2019 Institute\u2019s current exhibition <em>Ballarat Anzacs<\/em> in the Heritage Reading Room.<\/p>\n<p>A Lending Library presentation from historian Dr Phil Roberts will discuss Ballarat\u2019s Avenue of Honour and Arch of Victory on Thursday, 21 April at 11am, and this talk will be a prelude to Anzac Day on Monday, 25 April.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Avenue of Memories<\/em> author said he\u2019ll offer an \u201cillustrated talk\u201d about the historic, iconic local war memorials, and issues involved with them, and answer many common queries.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuestions to be answered include, what was Ballarat like during World War One, how did the idea of an Avenue come about, when and by whom was the Avenue planted, and are their servicemen and women from Ballarat in World War one without a tree?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever wondered if Ballarat\u2019s Avenue was the first in the country, if it\u2019s the longest in the world, or when it was constructed and opened, Dr Roberts will have all the answers on the morning of the talk.<\/p>\n<p>He said the audience is invited to ask questions and have discussions, especially regarding the particular topic of community attitudes to war commemoration, and whether they have changed since the First World War.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Roberts\u2019 talk will run for 40 minutes.
