CROSS-generational connections were made in Sebastopol during the Anzac Day long weekend.<\/p>\n
Young athletes from Sebastopol Football Netball Club were invited to assist representatives of the Sebastopol RSL to put out white crosses beside the suburb\u2019s cenotaph; a symbolic gesture to local fallen defence force personnel.<\/p>\n
Volunteers and parents attended the memorial on Sunday afternoon, helping with layout and installation, alongside \u2018keeper of the crosses\u2019 Ron Heron.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is the first year we\u2019ve had the children with us, and it\u2019s great, because we\u2019re educating them about Anzac Day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m very appreciative that they\u2019ve taken the time to come down and do it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fourteen-year-old Xavier saw the value in assisting others in his community.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s important to support the RSL because their members fought for our freedom,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Sebastopol RSL secretary Kevin Scott said the partnership has been a way to promote the two groups and highlight the next generation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese children are our future, and if we don\u2019t start getting them involved in Anzac Day traditions, it all means nothing to them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe really need to promote, at some level, community involvement, and this is a way of doing that.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhether we connect with a cadet unit, a football-netball club, a school group or girl guides, it doesn\u2019t matter, we just need to create some community involvement and participation, and help the kids understand what it\u2019s all about.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
