{"id":85278,"date":"2022-06-15T04:56:34","date_gmt":"2022-06-14T17:56:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=85278"},"modified":"2022-06-14T19:39:21","modified_gmt":"2022-06-14T08:39:21","slug":"new-show-about-cultural-connection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/new-show-about-cultural-connection\/","title":{"rendered":"New show about cultural connection"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A PART of local Chinese history will be projected for all to see as part of an upcoming exhibition this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Comprising drawings, paintings and video projection, the display, titled Journeys We Are On, will take place at Ballarat Trades Hall from Saturday, 18 June to Sunday, 19 June.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition features work by artists Jenny Zhe Chang, Ni Ni, Hong Fu, and Echo Cai &#8211; who will also curate the event &#8211; and Cai said the theme of the exhibition is about Chinese-Australian history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about making history come alive, and that connection between old and now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pieces are about capturing the Chinese heritage in Ballarat and the cultural touchstones that have passed through the generations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe video is always moving, and that together against the still images of the paintings and drawings provides a contrast for that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The pieces were inspired by writer Zhimin Shen\u2019s 2017 book Retracing the Great Walk which chronicles Chinese prospectors\u2019 journey from Robe to Ballarat during the gold rush.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, the artists filmed their recreation of the trip alongside interviews with the descendants of the original travellers, which became the video piece, Generations.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_85280\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-85280\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-85280\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/06\/ba-3-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-85280\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Artist Hong Fu\u2019s oil painting, After rain in Ballarat, will feature in the exhibition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other works include oil landscape paintings of Ballarat and The Classic of Mountains and Seas, a traditional Chinese scroll drawing depicting mythical beasts and lands.<\/p>\n<p>The artists will be present for both days, and Cai said the exhibition will highlight the connection between China and Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just engrained in the culture there, and that\u2019s something we should face and remember,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope it gives the audience a different angle to see the deep Chinese-Australian history in Ballarat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Journeys We Are On will run from 10am to 8pm on Saturday and 10am to 4pm on Sunday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A PART of local Chinese history will be projected for all to see as part of an upcoming exhibition this weekend.
