WHETHER visiting to see a show, hear an expert speak, or pick up a library book, a trip to the Ballaarat Mechanics\u2019 Institute is a treat for those who appreciate heritage architecture and design.<\/p>\n
But maintaining the Sturt Street space, which is more than 160 years old, is a constant, expensive challenge for the not-for-profit\u2019s board, who prioritise preservation of the building\u2019s history that complies with contemporary regulations.<\/p>\n
Having launched their Annual Appeal 2022, vice-president Jane Valpied said the BMI is aiming to raise at least $50,000 for repairs and improvements to one specific grand feature.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to raise the height of our staircase to bring it in line with building regulations, and install a handrail, but it is under heritage protection, so this is something that will take time, and be very expensive,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf our building is not compliant, it impacts our ability to host functions and events, so these works are vital.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re getting architects, the City council, and building specialists involved to make sure we\u2019re doing everything by the book, as well as maintaining that heritage feel.\u201d<\/p>\n
Now the BMI\u2019s basement is restored and ready for events, the organisation is also planning the installation of an elevator for all-abilities access.<\/p>\n
Ms Valpied said the board is striving to \u201clift\u201d the space up, raise its profile, and always expand offerings.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Institute is iconic in Ballarat, but it\u2019s underutilised, and people don\u2019t realise what\u2019s on offer. We\u2019re still shocked at how many people walk past and don\u2019t realise that it\u2019s here.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re trying to run events that are accessible to a diverse range of people, host high-class functions like weddings and balls in our stunning ballroom, and continue to renovate where we can,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to protect this building from falling into disrepair, which would be a disaster for the city.\u201d<\/p>\n
