AFTER eighteen months living in Lucas, Jan Brodie wanted to feel a sense of community.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s why she\u2019s organised an over-60s social group, where the suburb\u2019s seniors can get together, have a chat and enjoy a hot drink.<\/p>\n
The group held their first get-together on Tuesday last week at Emma\u2019s Bakery, and Ms Brodie said she feels its formation is necessary for the area.<\/p>\n
\u201cFriendship and communication\u2019s really important for any age, and it\u2019s not so easy for people of the senior generation to just put themselves out there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause Lucas is a younger environment, the opportunities aren\u2019t there for us seniors so I thought I\u2019d give this a try and so far, the response has been good.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eight people attended the first meeting which Ms Brodie aims to hold on a fortnightly basis.<\/p>\n
Gail Russell has lived in Lucas for two years, and said the group provided a great opportunity to connect with people at a similar age and with similar interests to her.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think everyone really enjoyed it. We all chatted and got on well. It was a great morning,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a great idea and something the community needs because it\u2019s so hard to meet new people around here.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s really giving people in Lucas the opportunity to get to know each other in a meaningful way so I can\u2019t wait for it to get bigger.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Brodie ran into two people she\u2019d met from the get-together, and said it was nice to see familiar faces in her community.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think that experience alone expands on itself with what I want to achieve with this group,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The group maintains contact via Facebook group chat and those wishing to join can message Ms Brodie or follow the Lucas Community Facebook group.<\/p>\n
