{"id":85449,"date":"2022-07-03T04:56:11","date_gmt":"2022-07-02T17:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=85449"},"modified":"2022-06-22T15:20:04","modified_gmt":"2022-06-22T04:20:04","slug":"goldfields-at-the-heart-for-historical-novelist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/goldfields-at-the-heart-for-historical-novelist\/","title":{"rendered":"Goldfields at the heart for historical novelist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">AFTER focusing on stories and characters from the United Kingdom, historical fiction author Karen Turner is turning her attention to the Victorian goldfields.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Having built a career as a finance writer, Turner published her first novel <em>Torn<\/em> in 2013, the first of a romance trilogy followed by <em>Inviolate<\/em> in 2014, and <em>Stormbird<\/em> 2019, all set in the English countryside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Wodonga-based author said it\u2019s now time to focus on her home state, working on her new book <em>Fever<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI was raised by my grandma in Ballarat, and I don\u2019t think I really appreciated the history of colonial Australia or the gold rush and the whole culture of that when I was growing up there,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">When she was 12 years old, Turner moved to Albury and visited Beechworth regularly.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Having lived in the UK before eventually returning home, she now finds inspiration from historic buildings located all over regional Victoria.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI went to Ballarat and Beechworth and spent some time there and really started to immerse myself in the mining culture and the history and stories started coming and I was inspired to write <em>Fever.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The book, slated for published late next year, will primarily be set in Ballarat, however characters will move around the goldfields.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">As part of her research, Turner said she is keen to visit Bendigo and immerse herself in the history<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cThe history in Europe is touchable, you can go there and physically touch it,\u201d she said. \u201cI think that\u2019s why now I spend so much time visiting Ballarat and Beechworth, I love to touch the history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">During her visit, Turner will also present a workshop to the Bendigo Writers Council at Bendigo Library on Wednesday, 29 June.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">She said she hopes \u201cpeople leave there knowing something they didn\u2019t when they arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">For more information head to <strong>bendigowriterscouncil.com\/calendar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>AFTER focusing on stories and characters from the United Kingdom, historical fiction author Karen Turner is turning her attention to the Victorian goldfields.
