{"id":86583,"date":"2022-08-11T04:57:54","date_gmt":"2022-08-10T18:57:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=86583"},"modified":"2022-08-11T08:51:17","modified_gmt":"2022-08-10T22:51:17","slug":"school-teaching-student-cyclists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/school-teaching-student-cyclists\/","title":{"rendered":"School teaching student cyclists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>STUDENTS at Mount Clear Primary School will be taught about road rules, bike handling and maintenance as part of a bicycle safety program.<\/p>\n<p>The sessions will be delivered via in classes, and tutoring coordinator Sam Cooper said the program will cover all kids need to know about keeping safe and bikes will maintained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be about riding a bike safely, using the road safely, how to maintain and look after your bike if things were to go wrong,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a number of kids that ride to school so if this can increase the number of kids riding and their confidence in it then that\u2019s a fabulous outcome.<\/p>\n<p>The program is being funded with $1600 from the State Government\u2019s $1.5 million Community Road Safety Grants program.<\/p>\n<p>Mount Clear Primary School\u2019s course is one of 33 projects being delivered across the Grampians region, with nearly $146,000 allocated to the area.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Bailey, Grampians regional director at the Department of Transport, said Mount Clear\u2019s program is being tailored by the school for the school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re able to support this but it\u2019s about the school delivering what they want rather than us trying to say this is what you need to do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_86586\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-86586\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-86586\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/08\/IMG_8972-scaled-e1660029961171-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/08\/IMG_8972-scaled-e1660029961171-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/08\/IMG_8972-scaled-e1660029961171-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/08\/IMG_8972-scaled-e1660029961171-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/08\/IMG_8972-scaled-e1660029961171.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-86586\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students will be taught about safe bike handling and maintenance, and road safety rules.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Member for Buninyong, Michaela Settle, visited the school on Tuesday to announce the grant and said a primary aim is to provide safer road conditions for the students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want them out there and active but more than anything I want them to be safe so this is all about providing that and getting them outdoors,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people would ride their bikes to school, and it has since become school pickup and drop-off.
