MENTORING organisation Big Brothers Big Sisters is seeking volunteers to support young people across the region.<\/p>\n
Information sessions for adults interested in contributing to the one-to-one and Men2B active mentor programs will be held at Barkly Square next week.<\/p>\n
Ballarat mentoring coordinator Jodie Downey said there are lots of young people in need of a supportive adult on the waiting list, so the not-for-profit needs many volunteers.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn our small group mentoring program, you work with two other mentors, up to 10 young people, and it\u2019s more structured, whereas the community-based one-to-one Mentoring is more informal where you act as an individual friend to a young person,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re providing the information sessions as a point of focus for people to understand the value of mentoring, not just for the young people, but for them as a person.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is something practical and hands-on that people can do which is very rewarding for both parties.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ms Downey said the weekly volunteer commitment is not a huge one but will mean so much to a young person between the age of seven and 17 who doesn\u2019t have other positive role models in their circle.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s lifechanging, not just for them but their families as well. When a mentoring situation works well, it\u2019s like a catalyst for change,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt can affect up to 10 people in the community because the young person\u2019s outlook changes. Often they\u2019re able to improve their marks at school, improve their other friendships, or make a connection which gets them involved in other activities.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Men2B Mentor information session will be held on Tuesday, 30 August from 4.30pm to 5pm, and the 1:1 will run on Wednesday, 31 August from 4.30pm to 5pm.<\/p>\n
