AS the warmer weather starts to return, so do community working bees, and two are coming up this month in Canadian.<\/p>\n
The Friends of local reserve Sparrow Ground are leading two weekend planting days at the Spencer Street parkland, which convenor Hedley Thomson said will not only be hands-on and practical, but educational.<\/p>\n
\u201cSparrow Ground contains a wonderful plethora of indigenous plants. This means that not a lot of the usual types of planting activities are needed, but some are,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Friends of Sparrow Ground have arranged two opportunities for residents to do a little planting and at the same time learn about what makes Sparrow Ground so special.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt really is the only reserve within the urban area of the city to have such a profusion of indigenous flora, which makes such good habitat for many animal and bird species.\u201d<\/p>\n
The first planting event at 2pm on Sunday, 18 September will focus on the Kline Street entrance by the creek, replacing plants removed or mown down.<\/p>\n
At the next working bee at 11am on Saturday, 24 September, the Friends and volunteers will look to the Richards Street entrance, aiming to complement the City\u2019s works, and easy access to the reserve.<\/p>\n
Those interested to come along are asked to dress appropriately for the weather and work, bring along their own shovels, spades, hammers, buckets and drinking water. Plants, guards, and stakes will be provided.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlanting shouldn\u2019t take more than an hour, to be followed by a tour of explanation and exploration of the Reserve for those who wish to come along,\u201d Mr Thomson said.<\/p>\n
