AN automotive trade educator from Federation TAFE is heading to Europe to be a WorldSkills International competition judge.<\/p>\n
A 17-year teaching veteran at FedTAFE, John Francis is heading to Dresden in Germany between 25 and 27 October to help crown an automotive skills world champion.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe competitions are no holiday,\u201d he said. \u201cThey are very busy and intense events. You belong to a group that value excellence in their respective fields.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe skill tests are all about attention to detail, precision, and excellence. The competitors grow in many ways, not just their trade skills but as individuals.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Francis teaches the certificate III in light vehicle mechanical technology, and the VicRoads Licenced Vehicle Tester course at Federation TAFE in Ballarat.<\/p>\n
He also has on-the-job experience in the mechanical trade, having worked in the industry before heading to uni at 40 years old to undertake a double bachelor degree in education and technology.<\/p>\n
The trip to Germany is not the first time Mr Francis has been involved with WorldSkills International.<\/p>\n
He first competed as an apprentice in 1983, winning a silver medal, and for the last 15 years he\u2019s at times acted as chief judge and technology expert, with roles on the world stage Brazil in 2015 and Russia in 2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile there must be a winner, everyone that participates will gain something,\u201d Mr Francis said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThose that put their hat into the ring to compete are already on their way to becoming a better, more confident person. It definitely helped me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Federation University pro vice-chancellor of vocational education and training Liam Sloan praised Mr Francis\u2019 dedication to his craft, and helping others.<\/p>\n
\u201cJohn is a passionate and dedicated teacher and his selection as a WorldSkills expert is fitting and well deserved,\u201d Mr Sloan said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHis significant knowledge and experience in the automotive industry is a real asset to Federation TAFE and our students. Now WorldSkills Internationals competitors will also benefit from his expertise.\u201d<\/p>\n
WorldSkills International takes place between September and November, seeing competitors from 60 countries, including a team of 15 from Australia, compete in a range of trade and vocation-based skills challenges.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
