{"id":88886,"date":"2022-11-25T04:58:35","date_gmt":"2022-11-24T17:58:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=88886"},"modified":"2022-11-25T08:40:09","modified_gmt":"2022-11-24T21:40:09","slug":"rare-and-lost-crafts-brought-back-to-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/rare-and-lost-crafts-brought-back-to-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Rare and lost crafts brought back to life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AFTER two-and-a-half years in development, the Australian Centre for Rare Arts and Forgotten Trades at Sovereign Hill is officially open.<\/p>\n<p>The centre is the culmination of a $3.7 million redevelopment of the Gold Museum building and will serve as a workshop space for crafts like basket-weaving, locksmithing and knife making.<\/p>\n<p>Launched on Friday last week, general manager Erin Santamaria said the centre is an important Australian first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the first time in Australia on this scale that there\u2019s been an institution created that brings together wood, fashion, textiles, leather under all types of disciplines,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore and more, our manufacturing sector is going offshore so this will be a real home for makers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis facility has world-class facilities in terms of the highest quality tools, machines, equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith respect to the original architecture, it\u2019s a massive example of 70s brutalist architecture with concrete walls, floor and natural light, it\u2019s been reinstated to its original architectural intent. We\u2019ve used recycled timber from a bridge in Omio.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_88888\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-88888\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-88888\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/11\/IMG_8307-scaled-e1669179897396-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/11\/IMG_8307-scaled-e1669179897396-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/11\/IMG_8307-scaled-e1669179897396-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/11\/IMG_8307-scaled-e1669179897396-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/11\/IMG_8307-scaled-e1669179897396.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-88888\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Workshop leader Naomi Holden casts a bolt of material for a new dress.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The facility was announced in 2020 in celebration of Sovereign Hill\u2019s 50th anniversary, with pilot workshops undertaken in the last few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>With a theatrette for panel discussions and seven workshop studios with an average capacity of six attendees, the centre\u2019s initial program will feature 20 sessions.<\/p>\n<p>New South Wales-based dry stone waller Emma Knowles is delivering one of the first workshop at the centre, and said it\u2019s a great asset for artisans throughout Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so few of us dry stone wallers in Australia, for example.
