PROCEEDS from the Ballarat Floral Art Group\u2019s annual display were donated to the Fiona Elsey Cancer Research Institute or FECRI last week during their Tuesday meeting.<\/p>\n
The group\u2019s president Anita Hinton presented the cheque at the Robert Clark Horticultural Centre and said it\u2019s their annual approach to assisting the community.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe try to pick a charity that\u2019s local to Ballarat so the money stays here,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s so many big charities that get lots of funding and some smaller ones people don\u2019t even know about in their struggle for funding.<\/p>\n
\u201cFECRI is close to our hearts. We\u2019ve all had someone who\u2019s had cancer.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor the display, the whole of the centre is just filled with flowers and all the members put into it based on a theme we choose the year before.\u201d<\/p>\n
The art display took place over two days in early October with this year\u2019s theme being \u201cpetals, pots and whatnots.\u201d<\/p>\n
More than 40 arrangements were made amongst the group\u2019s 22 members from flowers sourced from their own gardens.<\/p>\n
The Ballarat Floral Art Group has been meeting for 35 years, with their annual display previously spanning three days.<\/p>\n
Last year\u2019s funds were donated to Uniting Ballarat\u2019s BreezeWay meals program.<\/p>\n
FECRI chair Paula Nicholson accepted the cheque on behalf of the organisation, and said community donations are essential for their continuation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s always terrific especially when the community we depend upon so greatly come together and make us the charity of choice,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it\u2019s the way we\u2019ve thrived and we\u2019re very, very grateful for the ongoing community support.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese funds will go towards our research program. Our large scientific staff and development team is Ballarat-based but very much infiltrating the greater cancer research world.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Ballarat Floral Art Group\u2019s next floral display will be themed around \u201cflowers through the ages.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
