{"id":90149,"date":"2023-01-18T04:58:41","date_gmt":"2023-01-17T17:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=90149"},"modified":"2023-01-12T21:29:02","modified_gmt":"2023-01-12T10:29:02","slug":"uncover-the-bmis-best-secrets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/uncover-the-bmis-best-secrets\/","title":{"rendered":"Uncover the BMI\u2019s best secrets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WHETHER you\u2019ve visited many times, or never before, there\u2019s always something fascinating to discover inside the Ballaarat Mechanics\u2019 Institute.<\/p>\n<p>An easy way to find out about the space, what it has to offer, its history, and notable visitors is to take one of the organisation\u2019s weekly Minerva\u2019s Secrets tours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur day tours run every Tuesday at 2pm, led by one of our extremely knowledgeable volunteers,\u201d said BMI arts officer Katrina Hill. \u201cAs a not-for-profit we couldn\u2019t survive without them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEach of the tour guides knows something different about the building, so you can take the tour more than once and have a completely different experience each time, always with accurate information.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome of them have even written books on gold rush Ballarat, so they\u2019re exceptional guides to chat to, who will tell you secrets of the building and fun bits of information. Photos: FILE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe have wonderful graffiti from the late 1800s in the basement, which is a highlight, alongside some witch marks on the ceiling,\u201d Ms Hill said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had notable people come to the Minerva Room like Mark Twain, who spent three days in Ballarat and held lectures at the Ballaarat Mechanics Institute. He really adored his time here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere have been banquets with more than 1000 people in the space, and we\u2019ve had royalty come and visit the building in the 1800s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are unique, one-of-a-kind books, newspapers, documents, and specimens in the Heritage Reading Room, including an \u201cimpressive\u201d collection of texts on the supernatural, the occult, demonology, and phrenology which are hundreds of years old.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Hill said many locals are surprised by how large the building is when they enter, while others don\u2019t know where or what the institution is.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_89829\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-89829\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-89829\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/DSC_0181-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/DSC_0181-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/DSC_0181-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/DSC_0181-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/DSC_0181-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/DSC_0181-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/DSC_0181-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-89829\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">BMI staff and volunteers encourage locals to utilise the institution\u2019s facilities, like the lending library.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She encourages locals, particularly young people, to take the tours and check out the BMI\u2019s services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a cool, old space. We have a running theatre that seats up to 300 people, subscription and heritage libraries, unique maps and newspapers that you can\u2019t see anywhere else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a not-for-profit, we need fresh young eyes to come and take a look, to understand its value, its worth, and to help us maintain it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCome and see some shows, hire some rooms, borrow some books.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A statue of Minerva, the goddess of wisdom, sits atop the BMI on Sturt Street.<\/p>\n<p>A Minerva\u2019s Secrets night tour is currently in development, set to showcase projected images, taking attendees back to the mid-to-late-1800s.
