{"id":91297,"date":"2023-02-25T04:56:28","date_gmt":"2023-02-24T17:56:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=91297"},"modified":"2023-02-23T14:31:57","modified_gmt":"2023-02-23T03:31:57","slug":"marketplace-a-stitch-in-digital-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/marketplace-a-stitch-in-digital-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Marketplace a stitch in digital time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ITEMS put up for sale on Facebook Marketplace are often seen as replaceable, are unloved, or simply broken and unwanted.<\/p>\n<p>But now textile artist Lauren Matthews is highlighting some of her bizarre local Marketplace finds in her current exhibition, One Person\u2019s Trash, open for another week at Art Space Ballarat.<\/p>\n<p>With an interest in textile installations, Matthews is reimagining screen grabs of sale posts by bringing her own humourful embroidery to the images.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_91286\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91286\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-91286\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5653-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5653-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5653-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5653-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5653-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5653-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5653-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-91286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A pair of shoes, which don\u2019t match, are just some of the Facebook Marketplace finds which have been reimagined as part of One Person\u2019s Trash.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAbout a year ago, I asked my friends to send me things they found,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve collected so many Facebook advertisements, it\u2019s wild.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI could do this show 100 times over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Items featured include a 3D printed octopus with the face of Dwayne \u2018The Rock\u2019 Johnson, a pair of odd shoes, broken trampolines, stained couches, ramen seasoning, cigarette lighters, and even medieval stocks.<\/p>\n<p>Matthews said her aim was to present a funny collection, but there\u2019s also a more serious message.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt looks at waste, society, sustainability, and the way language influences people as well.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_91287\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91287\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-91287\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5661-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5661-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5661-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5661-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5661-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5661-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/IMG_5661-272x182.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-91287\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Visitors can listen to vinyl albums playing on a record player, all purchased on Facebook Marketplace, while they wander the exhibition.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of sexist language on Marketplace, so I\u2019m trying to subvert that, and challenge that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we say, one man\u2019s trash is another man\u2019s treasure, is it someone\u2019s treasure? Or is it just junk?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition has been Matthews\u2019 first opportunity to sell her work, and all gallery decorations have been bought on Marketplace.<\/p>\n<p>She is currently completing her PhD in textiles at Federation University and will be leading social sewing circles for other textile artists in the gallery space this weekend, and next.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ITEMS put up for sale on Facebook Marketplace are often seen as replaceable, are unloved, or simply broken and unwanted.
