BICYCLE security at Wendouree station is being looked at by the cycling community following a recent theft from one of the site\u2019s bike racks.<\/p>\n
With two racks of nine hoops at the station, Ballarat Bicycle User Group\u2019s Brendan McNally said although the security is decent, he wouldn\u2019t leave his $4000 electronic bike there.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe station\u2019s certainly in accordance with the City\u2019s bike plan but it\u2019s a matter of ease, security and convenience,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe roadways here are pretty good and the CCTV is all around the station. From that perspective is pretty good.\u201d<\/p>\n
Members of Ballarat Bicycle User Group are aiming to apply for a Parkiteer cage for the station through Bicycle Network, which McNally said would hold nearly 30 bikes.<\/p>\n
The City of Ballarat\u2019s Cr Belinda Coates said more security infrastructure would encourage more cyclists to use the station.<\/p>\n
\u201cAny additional infrastructure whether it\u2019s more secure parking does provide an additional incentive and encouragement for cyclists,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt makes it more convenient and safer for people to leave their bikes while travelling.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnything that makes it more convenient, easier and incentivises people using active transport is really essential to the vision for Ballarat being a better-connected city.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr McNally said a Parkiteer cage would be an \u201cexcellent solution\u201d requiring minimal infrastructure changes at the station.<\/p>\n
\u201cBasically, just a concrete pad and an electrical connection,\u201d he said. \u201cI think we can do something around that.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou get a little keyless tag to enter. When Bicycle Network sticks one in they normally enlist the local bike community to maintain it and it\u2019s monitored 24\/7.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you lock up at a Parkiteer cage like at Ballarat station, you don\u2019t have to worry. It\u2019d be nice to see this infrastructure ahead of the curve before the connected path.\u201d<\/p>\n
A V\/Line spokesperson said there were plenty of security measures are in place at Wendouree Station already.<\/p>\n
\u201cWendouree station is staffed from before first train service in the morning until late at night, with CCTV cameras also monitoring the station surrounds,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n
\u201cRiding a bike is a great way to get to a V\/Line station, but passengers should always ensure they use a quality lock, and lock both the frame and wheels to the hoop.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
