NEW cricket nets were opened at Russell Square last Friday.<\/p>\n
Six nets have been built, with five for the East Ballarat Cricket Club and an extra one for community use.<\/p>\n
They replaced the clubs\u2019 outdated nets which have been demolished.<\/p>\n
Works began at the beginning of 2022, with the project costing more than $450,000 and funded by the City of Ballarat and the Victorian Government.<\/p>\n
East Ballarat Cricket Club vice-president Mark Simpson said he was thrilled to have the new facilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cToday we stand proudly at Russell square used by 2200 sporting participants this calendar year,\u201d he said. \u201cThis is the most used venue in country Victoria.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe need to encourage the council and State Government to keep growing this venue.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you so much for everyone who\u2019s helped with these magnificent nets.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe new facilities are fantastic for us and will make a huge difference to our club and our junior program, in particular the safer and more inclusive infrastructure.\u201d<\/p>\n
City of Ballarat mayor Cr Des Hudson spoke at the opening on behalf of the municipality.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re very proud to deliver this new and cricket improved training facility and it\u2019s great to know there has already been substantial community benefit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
