{"id":91856,"date":"2023-03-17T04:57:14","date_gmt":"2023-03-16T17:57:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=91856"},"modified":"2023-03-17T09:10:16","modified_gmt":"2023-03-16T22:10:16","slug":"begonias-bloom-on-long-weekend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/begonias-bloom-on-long-weekend\/","title":{"rendered":"Begonias bloom on long weekend"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE Ballarat Botanical Gardens were awash with people and colour over the Labour Day weekend with the return of the Ballarat Begonia Festival.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its 71st year, the three-day event saw thousands flock to the region with more than 500 different types of the titular flowers on display at the Robert Clark Conservatory.<\/p>\n<p>The event returned to a traditional three-day offering after running for 10 days last year and a month in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>City of Ballarat mayor Cr Des Hudson said the more compact delivery made for a stronger festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s made it much easier for external businesses to come here and having the farmer\u2019s market for the two days has helped as well as the children\u2019s carnival,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe atmosphere\u2019s really positive here. The crowd on Saturday was one of the busiest first-day crowds I\u2019ve seen for a long, long time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEqually on Sunday afternoon, there are lots of families and visitors. The line-up to go see the begonias has been steady all day.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_91859\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-91859\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-91859\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/03\/2H3A9891-scaled-e1678850254730-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/03\/2H3A9891-scaled-e1678850254730-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/03\/2H3A9891-scaled-e1678850254730-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/03\/2H3A9891-scaled-e1678850254730-272x182.jpg 272w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/03\/2H3A9891-scaled-e1678850254730.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-91859\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ruping Ding was one of thousands of people to observe the begonia collection at the Robert Clark Conservatory.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mount Clear resident Julie Aquilina headed to the Ballarat Botanical Gardens on the Sunday morning with her daughters Emma and Michaela.<\/p>\n<p>A self-proclaimed avid gardener, she said she\u2019d been meaning to go the Begonia Festival for years after moving to the region in 2020, and that the event certainly didn\u2019t disappoint.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been wonderful,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019ve been learning a little bit too and being able to see the other traders is great.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe megawatt begonia was definitely a highlight which I want to go and get.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI also want to learn about the different types because there\u2019s the tubulars which tend to die off and there\u2019s the others that stay green the entire time which I didn\u2019t know.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe came up to Lake Wendouree on Saturday but we wanted to take advantage of all the begonias the day after and also the farmer\u2019s market on the other side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is my first time here. My girls came last year when I was interstate and for years I always missed it. She really loved seeing them on their stilts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so much colour here. It\u2019s really stood out, and there\u2019s still heaps for us to do.
