	{"id":92059,"date":"2023-03-25T04:57:15","date_gmt":"2023-03-24T17:57:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/?p=92059"},"modified":"2023-03-22T22:44:40","modified_gmt":"2023-03-22T11:44:40","slug":"meat-master-moves-business","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/ballarat\/news\/meat-master-moves-business\/","title":{"rendered":"Meat master moves business"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AFTER about thirty years working in Ballarat, a seasoned server of cut meats has moved his trade to Buninyong.<\/p>\n<p>After managing his My Butcher stores throughout the region, Barry Flower opened Buninyong Butcher late last month.<\/p>\n<p>He said it\u2019s offering a more intimate approach than his previous ventures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve gone from two massive shops down to a smaller, customer-friendly setup,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to enjoy my butchering here rather than just non-stop push, push, push.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe went from 20-odd people 20 years ago to half a dozen in Curtis Street and I might have a couple part-timers here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Flower spent 20 years at his Sturt Street My Butcher branch and his Stockland superstore before relocating to Curtis Street for nine years.<\/p>\n<p>He said his decision to downsize was partly informed by a \u201cdwindling\u201d of the butcher trade and dedicated businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re a dying breed,\u201d he said. \u201cFor the last 10, 15 years, staff, especially butchers, you just can\u2019t get them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost little retailers have been knocked on the head by the larger supermarkets. In doing that, there\u2019s no staff so there\u2019s no proper butchers being trained properly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s been going on for a long time. In the Ballarat CBD, my Curtis Street shop was the only one there whereas 30 years ago there was about 15, 20 shops in that area.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Buninyong Butcher was previously the site of Greenvale Quality Meats which closed in 2022 after three years in operation.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Flower said his shop has been embraced by the local community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think they\u2019ve really missed the little butcher here. There was one here from John Whykes for many years which I know has been missed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuninyong people, I think, are a bit old-school.
