A CITY of Ballarat apprentice horticulturalist was part of a team awarded best visual display at the recent Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show.<\/p>\n

Jaclyn Gordon worked as part of the first all-female team with Emma Sheppard-Simms, whose design was chosen as the winner of an Opens Garden Victoria design competition.<\/p>\n

Ms Gordon saw the call out from Ms Sheppard-Simms for a horticulturalist and was chosen to help create the garden.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmma was calling for female horticulturalists which sparked my interest straight away,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDesign is something that I absolutely love and I\u2019ve been working with the City of Ballarat since 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really enjoy making those spaces which nurture people\u2019s connection to nature.\u201d<\/p>\n

The winning garden was called A Place for Us<\/em> and focuses on sustainability, biodiversity, and local materials.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was about demonstrating the diversity in plant choices and celebrating native plants,\u201d Ms Gordon said.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy role was to help with acquiring the plants and installing them in the design.\u201d<\/p>\n

She said the project was a great learning experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely developed my career in that this is the avenue I\u2019d like to go with horticulture,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve learnt what actually goes into a project like this as there\u2019s a lot of pre-planning and challenges which come up along the way.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think women are underrepresented in the industry and its important to convey it\u2019s not just a man\u2019s trade and it\u2019s something women can bring their skillsets to.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
